Specifications:

  • 10x4 Feet
  • 14 4 foot SureGro NFT Channels
  • 20 Gallon Rubbermaid container Reinforced with 2x4 due to weight
  • 275 GPH Little Giant Pump
  • On 200 lb casters to enable the structure to be moved into the garage on cold nights.
  • 6 mil plastic cover
  • Average of 5 gallons per day water use.
  • 16mm PP Tubing used for feed lines
  • 1/4" drip lines were used 2 per channel
  • No glue was used
  • Aquarium silicone was used on NFT channels to stop leaks
  • Estimated cost to build, $400
  • Time to recover costs 6 months

Growing Facts

  • Lettuce was started in 1 inch rockwool cubes under 400 watt MH Agrosun light
  • Lettuce was grown for 3 weeks or until space was made before being transplanted outdoors
  • Lettuce grew for approximately 3-4 weeks in channels before being removed and consumed
  • Maximum recorded temperature was 104 degrees F
  • Minimum recorded temperature was 35 degrees F
  • The system is still running as of 10/19/2001
  • Varieties grown include Red Oak, Romaine, Arugula, Thai Green, Butter Crunch, North Pole, Spinach, and Spring mix.
  • Fertilizer was the HydroGro mix and Calcium Nitrate from CropKing

Largest Head of Lettuce Grown

This head of lettuce is sitting on a 5 gallon bucket. To give you a size reference, the tiles are 1 foot square.
